For Yasgur's Farm (Live) ꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷ One of the most ferociously crunching heavy metal bands of all time and one of the most popular live acts of the festival and arena rock era that followed in the wake of Woodstock, Mountain was formed during the Woodstock year of 1969. The New York-based foursome was first and foremost, a dual showcase for the formidable lead guitar and vocal talents of Leslie West (b. Leslie Weinstein, 1945-2021) and the in-studio wizardry of record production mastermind Felix Pappaldari (1939-1983). Pappalardi, who also served as the group's bassist and second lead singer, was during this period one of the hottest producers, having guided the on-disc fortunes of Cream, the English blues-rock unit who virtually created the notion of the virtuoso power trio. Mountain dominated on stage by gargantuan West, was more meat and potatoes rock-oriented than Cream, but West's masterful use of Vibrato and fuzzy distortion betrayed a certain allegiance to Cream's great string-bender, Eric Clapton. Climbing!, the second album under the name Mountain, but first with the line-up most fans associate with the band, was a landslide success, reaching number 17 in 1970 on the billboard Hot 100 LP-chart and attaining gold record status. The album also yielded the hit single - and Mountain's signature song - "Mississippi Queen," whose cowbell-clanging cadence , swaggering, bottom-heavy guitar riff, and West's appealing gravelly vocal made it a hard rock classic. Newly remastered for maximum impact, the expanded edition features an unreleased live version of the Woodstock Festival ode "For Yaguar's Farms" as well as amusing reminiscences in the liner notes by West and drummer Corky Laing.
